Ice Castles!
I’ve been wanting to visit the Ice Castles for a few years, so I was thrilled it worked out this month when the kids had a four-day weekend from school. And, we were able to go with friends, making it twice as fun!
Ice Castles are located in Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Utah and Wisconsin. We are lucky that they are just four hours away from us. I know there is a similar thing in Idaho as well, and maybe elsewhere! It’s just one small perk of living in a place where it’s freezing for weeks on end.
We arrived at 4:30 pm because we wanted to see the attractions in the daytime and also at sunset, as there are LED lights inside the ice that glow when it gets dark.
It felt like 7 degrees when we got there and 2 degrees when we left. We lasted almost an hour with the kids. We all had snow pants and boots on, but our toes just got too cold! I will be buying some wool socks for next time to see if that helps. I wish we had been able to go when it was warmer and less busy, but we still loved it!
There are ice slides and benches, sculptures and thrones, fountains and caves, all made of hundreds of thousands of icicles and water, built by professional ice artists! It really is like a fairytale. I can’t believe it actually exists. Absolutely incredible!
If you want to visit, buy tickets in advance online to ensure your entry time. Then you can stay as long as you want. It appears that morning times are less busy than afternoon and evening. Just one fun idea to enjoy some time outside in January and February!
