one week with Finch

Can you believe little Finch is a week old already?

Eric was off work this week, which was super nice. After Rooney was born we needed a lot of help from our moms so we have never done this before where it's just the two of us at home (during the week) with a newborn. I'm so proud of how far we've come! We have been learning this baby and also catching up on Modern Family (best show!). It's been fun. I have yet to change a diaper or make myself a meal. Monday should be interesting!

I bonded with Finch right away - he is an absolute dreamboat. I said in the van on our way home from the hospital that we could totally have more babies :-) to which Eric laughed because I think I said the opposite of that during labor. I don't think we'll try to have more but, geez, I think I'm happier than I have ever been.

Overall it has been going really well...we are finding our rhythm. The hardest part is when Rooney comes home from school because Finch likes to feed at that time and she isn't sure why I can't take her to the park since I "don't have a baby in my tummy anymore." Heart. Breaker. I'm looking forward to being 100% recovered and healed so I can be a fun mom again. She has been acting out a bit (kicking your brother in the head while he's nursing is normal, right?). At least now we know Finch can sleep through a 10-minute temper tantrum. I don't blame her. Everything used to be about her, but now she has to share. Really, most of the time she is really good with him. She loves to hold him and kiss him and squeeze him and hug him. And by "hug him" I mean "lay on him," but we're working on it.

I've had two really really brief moments of anxiety, and both times I was sure to talk it out with Eric as soon as I felt it coming on, but overall my hormone balance is so much better than last time. I've only cried three times since his birth, and one of those was happy tears. #placentapills

Breastfeeding so far has been amazing + complicated + magical + tiring + beautiful. There were definitely some rough feedings early on but for now it's working and feels right. Never thought I'd say this considering my past, but nursing is way easier than washing bottles! (Please send recommendations for nursing bras!)

If you're someone who (like me) had trouble adjusting to your first baby, I just want to encourage you that it's been COMPLETELY different for me this time around. Labor, delivery, breastfeeding, recovery, moods, etc. - it has all been so much smoother. Praise God!

Rooney came into our bed at 3:00 am the second night we were home and there we were - a new family of four dripping with exhaustion and change and happiness and wonderment - all in bed together. It was the most beautiful mess I've ever seen. Me and my three favorite people, all asleep in one bed. I just laid there and thanked God for it all.

Thanks to everyone for your congratulatory comments, texts and emails. It means a ton.

P.S. If you have a baby who won't sleep anywhere but in your arms, watch The Happiest Baby on the Block DVD. It has been our lifesaver both times!
